Philadelphia Mourns Officer’s Loss: Richard Mendez, a 23-Year Veteran, Killed in the Line of Duty

Philadelphia law enforcement authorities have shared a compiled video featuring one of the potential culprits involved in the shooting of two officers, one of whom tragically lost their life, on Thursday night at the parking garage located in Philadelphia International Airport.

The situation unraveled as the officers, who were just beginning their shift, confronted a group of three to four individuals who seemed to be engaged in breaking into a vehicle.

During an altercation, the officers, alongside an 18-year-old male believed to be one of the suspects, were fired upon, as per official reports.

Video footage reveals a suspect approaching a locked sliding glass door, subsequently changing course and leaving the frame.

This individual closely matches the description given in police radio calls from that Thursday evening, indicating that the suspect was wearing a black sweatshirt over a green T-shirt, black pants, black shoes with white soles, and a mask concealing their face.

The video then transitions to a scene inside the parking garage, where a black Dodge Durango is seen speeding around a corner. In the following frame, the Durango is spotted reversing near the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, obstructing an ambulance parked there.

The driver of the Durango exits the vehicle and proceeds to the driver’s side rear door of the ambulance. Subsequently, the driver appears to move the lifeless body of the 18-year-old from the Durango and places it in front of the ambulance before quickly departing from the scene.

Officer Richard Mendez, aged 50, lost his life at Penn Presbyterian Hospital after sustaining multiple upper torso gunshot wounds. Mendez was just three days shy of completing his 23rd year of service with the Philadelphia police force.

Officer Raul Ortiz, aged 60, who sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, was transported to Jefferson Hospital for medical attention.

An extensive search for the Durango was conducted throughout the night and early morning hours.

The 18-year-old who tragically lost his life has been identified as Jesus Herman Madera Duran from Camden, New Jersey.

Authorities have revealed that the Durango, which had been reported as stolen nearly a week prior, was later discovered burned in South Brunswick, New Jersey.

The vehicle is slated for investigation by the FBI, ATF, and the Philadelphia Police Crime Scene Unit in search of evidence.
