Newton County Firefighters Battle Second Wildfire in a Week on Lee’s Mill Road

Firefighters in Newton County found themselves responding to yet another wildfire on Tuesday afternoon. This incident occurred on County Road 2001, also known as Lee’s Mill Road, in close proximity to the previous wildfire they battled just two days prior.

Newton Fire Captain Melanie Smith reported that the most recent fire ignited around noon. Firefighters from both Newton and Burkeville, in collaboration with the Texas A&M Forest Service, devoted approximately 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control. At one point, the road had to be temporarily closed for safety measures.

Captain Smith revealed that Tuesday’s fire consumed approximately 4 acres of land, whereas Sunday’s fire had affected around 8.5 acres.

The cause behind both of these fires remains unknown at this time.
